Allen Community Senior Citizens Center
Mission Statement
To programmatically serve the elderly in the community through the provision of a variety of comprehensive services that meet the:
needs of program participants in a caring and sensitive manner.
Our History
The Allen Community Senior Citizens Center is a community based agency located in Southeast Queens, providing a wide variety of services to the senior population. Funding for these services are provided through the NYC Department for the Aging (DFTA). The Allen Community Senior Citizens Center provides services to over 1,000 participants, ages 60 and over.
The late Bishop Donald George Kenneth Ming, former Pastor of Allen AME Church, organized the center. It was designed to provide activities that would lesson isolation and seclusion and increase opportunities for socializing.
On March 27, 1974, under the direction of the late Ms. Rose I. Jenkins; the newly incorporated center opened its doors as the Allen Community Senior Citizens Center. Under the leadership of Ms. Jenkins and the subsequently appointed and current Pastor of Allen, the Rev. Floyd H. Flake, the program was expanded to introduce educational, consumer and nutritional education programs. In addition, a Senior Advisory Council was organized.
In June 1982, the Allen Community Senior Citizens Center, Inc. moved to its present location inside the Allen Senior Citizens Complex. It was through the diligent efforts of the Rev. Dr. Floyd H. Flake, the current Pastor of the Allen AME Church, Jamaica, New York (now The Greater Allen AME Cathedral of New York) that the center secured these premises.
Over the years, the center has introduced many new programs, including: health and fitness programs, line dancing, Zumba/Chair Fitness under The Tommy Experience, Tai Chi, Adult Coloring, Cultural activities, Health and Civic activities, Storytelling, Coffee Hour, Rap Sessions, and computer learning sessions, including advanced and basic technological programs. Individual case assistance and support are also offered. The center also provides a hot and nutritious lunch each day.
Very popular with the seniors are our day and overnight trips that are organized throughout the year.
